Adipex information
Adipex-P is an appetite suppressant used in the context of an overall diet and exercise plan for the treatment of obesity. While the overall weight-loss plan is normally long-term, Adipex is only effective for short-term use.
The active ingredient in Adipex, phentermine, is a chemical that mimics the action of the stress hormone norepinephrine and acts as stimulant in the brain. One of the results is that the patient taking phentermine has a reduced appetite.
Using Adipex
Take once a day on an empty stomach, usually 30-60 min. before breakfast. It is not recommended to take it late in the day as it can cause difficulties falling asleep. The tablet can be broken or cut in two if necessary, but not crushed or chewed.
Take only as prescribed. Do not take higher doses or take Adipex more frequently than directed. Adipex is a short-term drug: do not take it for a longer period of time than directed.
How to store Adipex
Store at room temperature, out of the reach of children.
What to do on a missed Adipex Dosge
If you miss a dose, do not double the next one to catch up; taking a double dose may be dangerous.
Adipex's Side Effects
Possible mild side effects of Adipex are dry mouth, sleeplessness, dizziness, irritability, stomach upset or constipation. Consult your MD about any side effects that persist, seem unusual, or are especially bothersome.
Phentermine and similar substances can raise blood pressure and are also associated with depression. For more information consult your MD and see product leaflet.
Drug Interactions with Adipex
Tell your MD about all drugs you may be taking, whether prescription or non prescription, especially if you take high blood pressure medicine or MAO inhibitors furazolidone, phenelzine, selegiline, tranylcypromine or any other weight loss medicine. If you begin taking Bontril, you should avoid other "stimulant" drugs that may increase your heart rate such as decongestants (commonly found in over-the-counter cough and cold medicine) or caffeine.
Adipex Warnings
Tell your MD your complete medical history before starting to use Adipex, especially if you have high blood pressure, diabetes an over-active thyroid, glaucoma, previous problems with stimulants, or emotional problems.
If you are or might become pregnant, or if you are or might start breast-feeding, consult a MD before using Adipex.
Adipex may cause dizziness and drowsiness. Limit alcohol consumption to control these effects.
This is an adult drug and is not recommended for use in children.
Adipex-P is contraindicated in arteriosclerosis, cardiovascular disease, and moderate to severe hypertension.
Other contraindications or adverse events include central nervous system effects, gastrointestinal disturbances, hives, and changes in libido.
Caution is necessary in patients with mild hypertension. Primary pulmonary hypertension (PPH) and cardiac valvular disease have been reported in patients receiving a combination of phentermine and fenfluramine or dexfenfluramine. The possibility of an association between PPH and the use of phentermine alone cannot be ruled out.
