Valproic acid belongs to the family of drugs called anticonvulsants. These drugs are used in controlling certain types of seizures in epileptics. They may be used alone or in combination with other seizure medications.
Using Depakote
Dosage is different for different patients. Take exactly as directed by your MD in order to prevent seizures and reduce side effects.
If you are taking the capsule form, swallow the capsules whole, without breaking, crushing, or chewing. The liquid inside the capsule may irritate the mouth and throat if the capsule is broken.
If you are taking the syrup form, the syrup may be mixed with any liquid or added to food for a better taste.
Take the medication with food or after meals to reduce stomach upset.
How to store Depakote
Store away from heat, direct light, and moisture. Keep out of the reach of children.
What to do on a missed Depakote Dosge
If you take one dose a day -- take the missed dose as soon as possible within the same day. If you do not remember until the next day, just skip the missed dose and take the next one as usual.
If you take more than one dose a day, take the missed dose as soon as possible within 6 hours of its scheduled time. Then adjust the times for the next doses of the day so that you still take them at equally spaced intervals. If you only remember after more than 6 hours have passed, skip the missed dose and take the next one as usual.
Avoid taking a double dose.
If you miss more than one dose, or if you have any other questions about missed doses, consult your doctor.
