Nardil (phenelzine) is an antidepressant of the class called monoamine oxidase inhibitors (MAOIs). It increases the levels of certain brain chemicals that are thought to lead to depression when unbalanced. It is used to treat depressive symptoms such as feelings of sadness or worthlessness, loss of motivation, sleeping/tiredness problems and suicidal thoughts.
Using Nardil
Take exactly as directed. Take each dose with a full glass of water.
Nardil may take 4 weeks or more to have a noticeable effect. Do not stop taking it without first consulting your doctor.

Store phenelzine at room temp. away from moisture and heat.
What to do on a missed Nardil Dosge
Take the missed dose as soon as you remember, but if it is almost time for your next regularly scheduled dose, skip the missed dose and take only the next one as directed. Avoid taking a double dose.
Nardil's Side Effects
If you seem to experience an allergic reaction to Nardil, stop taking it and seek immediate medical care.
You are more likely to experience one of the following less serious side effects: dizziness or drowsiness, tremors, weakness, restlessness, anxiety, insomnia, nausea or decreased appetite, abdominal pain, diarrhea or constipation, dry mouth, or blurred vision. If you experience any of these symptoms, keep taking Nardil and consult a doctor. Consult a MD if you experience any symptoms that seem unusual or are especially bothersome.
Drug Interactions with Nardil
Nardil can interact with many other drugs, increasing the side effects or both or creating new and dangerous side effects. Do not take Nardil with any of the following drugs without first consulting your doctor: anesthetics; other antidepressant medicines, including Effexor, Elavil, Zoloft, Paxil, and many others; diabetes medications, including insulin, Micronase, Diabeta, Glynase, Orinase, and others; sleep and antiseizure medications; heart medicines such as propranolol (Inderal), metoprolol (Lopressor), carvedilol (Coreg), labetalol (Normodyne, Trandate), nadolol (Corgard), methyldopa (Aldomet), and reserpine (Serpasil); diuretics (water pills; the cough medicine dextromethorphan, contained in many prescription and over-the-counter cough and cold products; levodopa (Sinemet, Larodopa, Dopar); meperidine (Demerol); sulfonamides such as Azulfidine, Septra, and others; sumatriptan (Imitrex); decongestants and diet aids that contain the ingredients phenylpropanolamine, pseudoephedrine, ephedrine, phenylephrine, and others; methylphenidate (Ritalin). Nardil may also decrease the activity of guanethidine (Ismelin).
Other drugs may also interact with Nardil. Talk to your MD and pharmacist before taking any prescription or over-the-counter medicines.
Foods that have high levels of tyramine can cause a severe reaction when combined with Nardil -- including a severe headache, large pupils, neck stiffness, nausea, vomiting, sweating, irregular heart beats, chest pain, and even death. Call your MD immediately if you experience any of these symptoms. The foods you should avoid while taking Nardil are: cheeses, sour cream and yogurt; beef or chicken liver, fish, meats prepared with tenderizer, bologna, pepperoni, salami, summer sausage, game meat, meat extracts, caviar, dried fish, herring, and shrimp paste; avocados, bananas, figs, raisins, and sauerkraut; soy sauce, miso soup, bean curd, fava beans; yeast extracts; ginseng; chocolate; caffeine (coffee, tea, cola, etc.); and beer (including nonalcoholic), red wine, and various distilled spirits.
Nardil may cause dizziness or drowsiness. Use caution when performing dangerous activities that require attentiveness, such as driving or operating machinery.

Do not quit taking Nardil without consulting your MD first.
Before taking Nardil, tell your MD your complete medical history, especially if you have heart or blood-pressure problems, liver disease, kidney disease, pheochromocytoma, diabetes, seizures or epilepsy; or thyroid problems.
It is not known whether Nardil will harm an unborn baby. Pregnant women should not take it without first consulting a doctor.
It is not known whether Nardil will harm an nursing baby. Breastfeeding women should not take it without first consulting a doctor.
If you are over 60 years of age, you may be more likely to experience side effects from phenelzine. You may require a lower dose of this medication.
If you think you or another patient using Nardil is experiencing a Nardil overdose, seek emergency medical attention. Symptoms of a phenelzine overdose include excitement, irritability, hyperactivity, anxiety, dizziness, fainting, weakness, insomnia, restlessness, fatigue, hallucinations, flushing, sweating, fast heartbeats, convulsions, a severe headache, coma, and death.
