Nexium is a prescription drug used for the treatment of acid reflux disease. It works by shutting off tiny acid pumps in your stomach.

Using Nexium

Take exactly as directed. Take at least 1 hour before a meal unless directed otherwise. Swallow the capsule whole. If you have problems swallowing capsules, you may open the Nexium capsule and sprinkle the contents on 1 tablespoon of applesauce. Mix the medicine with the applesauce and swallow immediately. The applesauce should not be hot and should be soft enough to swallow without chewing. Discard any uneaten applesauce/medicine mixture. Nexium may be taken with antacids if your MD has instructed you to take antacids.

What to do on a missed Nexium Dosge

Take the missed dose as soon as you remember, unless it is almost time for your next dose. In the latter case, skip the missed dose and take only the regularly scheduled one. Avoid taking a double dose.

Nexium's Side Effects

During use of Nexium you may experience headache, constipation, cough, or diarrhea. These effects may go away by themselves. If they persist or are bothersome, consult a doctor. Consult a MD immediately if you experience throat pain, chest pain, severe stomach pain, or coffee-ground vomit. It is unlikely that you will have an allergic reaction to Nexium, but if you do, seek immediate medical attention. Allergic reaction symptoms include rash, itching, swelling, dizziness, and difficulty breathing.

Drug Interactions with Nexium

Tell your MD if you are using any of the following drugs: digoxin (Lanoxin, Lanoxicaps); itraconazole (Sporanox) or ketoconazole (Nizoral); or iron (Feosol, Mol-Iron, Fergon, Femiron, others). It may prevent you from taking Nexium or you may need a dosage adjustment or special monitoring.

Nexium Warnings

Consult a MD or pharmacist before starting treatment with any medicine. If you have an allergic reaction to Nexium, or if you have ever had an allergic reaction to Prilosec, do not use Nexium. If you are pregnant or anticipate becoming pregnant, consult a MD about the benefits and risks of using Nexium during pregnancy. It is unknown whether Nexium passes into breast milk.
