Prevacid information
Prevacid blocks acid in the stomach. It is prescribed for the treatment of ulcers, esophagitis and various conditions stemming from high acid secretion.
Using Prevacid
Take as directed by your doctor. Generally, Prevacid should be taken by mouth, usually once a day, one hour before a meal (the drug will be significantly less effective if taken after a meal). Prevacid may be prescribed twice a day in certain conditions.
Prevacid capsules should be swallowed whole; do not open or chew them. If you have esophageal (throat) problems or have difficulty swallowing, open the capsule and sprinkle the contents over a soft food such as applesauce, then swallow small amounts without chewing.
Do not take more or more often of the Prevacid than was prescribed for you. Do not stop taking Prevacid without consulting a MD first.
How to store Prevacid
Store at room temp. away from sunlight and moisture. Keep out of the reach of children.
What to do on a missed Prevacid Dosge
If you miss a dose of Prevacid, take it as soon as you remember. However, if it is almost time for the next regularly scheduled dose, skip the dose you missed and take only the next one as scheduled. Avoid taking a double dose unless your MD directs you specifically to do so.
Prevacid's Side Effects
Some side effects that may occur as a result of using Prevacid are nausea and stomach pain; if these effects persist or are bothersome, consult a doctor.
Inform a MD if you develop diarrhea, rapid heartbeat, muscle pain, chest pain, changes in stool color, stomach pain, breathing trouble mood changes or vision changes.
It is unlikely that you will experience an allergic reaction to Prevacid, but if you do, seek immediate medical help. Allergic reaction symptoms include rash, itching, swelling, dizziness, and difficulty breathing.
Drug Interactions with Prevacid
Sucralfate (Carafate), which is also used to treat stomach conditions, will decrease the amount of Prevacid that is absorbed through the stomach. Prevacid should be taken at least 30 minutes before sucralfate to prevent an interaction. Some other medications such as ketoconazole (Nizoral), ampicillin (Omnipen, Principen), digoxin (Lanoxin, Lanoxicaps), and iron (Feosol, Mol-Iron, Fergon, Femiron) may have decreased effects because Prevacid hinders their absorption from the stomach. Tell your MD if you are taking any of these medications.
Prevacid Warnings
Tell your MD of any drugs you might be taking, whether prescription or non-prescription, especially sucralfate, iron, theophylline, ampicillin, digoxin, or ketoconazole. Do not start or stop taking any type of medication without the approval of your MD or pharmacist.
Prevacid may cause an allergic reaction in patients with a history of sensitivity to Omeprazole/Lansoprazole.
