If you experience any of the following uncommon but serious side effects, stop taking Wellbutrin and seek emergency medical attention or contact your MD immediately: an allergic reaction (difficulty breathing; closing of the throat; swelling of the lips, tongue, or face; or hives); seizures; or fast or irregular heartbeats.

Drug Interactions with Wellbutrin

Wellbutrin should not be taken at the same time as taking drugs from the family known as monoamine oxidase inhibitors (MAOI), or within two weeks of taking MAOIs. MAOIs include isocarboxazid (Marplan), phenelzine (Nardil), and tranylcypromine (Parnate). If you have taken Wellbutrin, wait at least 14 days before taking a MAOI, and vice versa.

Wellbutrin Warnings

Limit alcohol comsumption while taking Wellbutrin. Alcohol may increase the risk of having a seizure while taking Wellbutrin. However, if you usually consume large amounts of alcohol, stopping suddenly may also increase your risk of getting a seizure. Discuss your alcohol consumption with a MD before starting your Wellbutrin treatment. Wellbutrin may cause dizziness or drowsiness. Use caution when performing dangerous activities that require alertness, such as driving or operating machinery. If you are dizzy, be careful when rising from a sitting or lying position.
