Zovirax information
Zovirax (acyclovir) is used to treat the symptoms of chickenpox and shingles; herpes virus infections of the genitals, skin, brain, and mucous membranes (lips and mouth); and widespread herpes virus infections in newborns. It is also used to prevent recurrent genital herpes infections.
Zovirax is not a cure for herpes, but it does relieve the pain and discomfort, as well as helping sores heal.
Zovirax may also be used for other virus infections as determined by your doctor. However, there are various virus infections on which it will not work, such as the common cold.
Using Zovirax
Patient information about the treatment of herpes, chickenpox, or shingles is available with the Zovirax package. Read it carefully before using this medicine.
Zovirax treatment is most effective if it is started within 48 hours of when the symptoms of herpes infection or shingles (for example, pain, burning, blisters) begin to appear, or as soon as possible after the first sign of the chickenpox rash, usually within one day.
Zovirax may be taken with food or on an empty stomach.
How to store Zovirax
Store away from heat and direct light, and keep out of the reach of children. Keep away from moisture (do not store the capsule or tablet form of this medicine in the bathroom, near the kitchen sink, or in other damp places). Do not keep outdated medicine or medicine no longer needed. Be sure that any discarded medicine is out of the reach of children.
What to do on a missed Zovirax Dosge
If you miss a dose, take it as soon as remembered, unless it is almost time for the next dose. If it is almost time for the next dose, just skip the dose you missed and take only the one regularly scheduled. Avoid taking a double dose.
